Acreage - How Much do you Need?

According to horse experts, your first horse requires two acres. Each additional horse after will require an additional acre. For example, if you have five horses, we recommend purchasing a property with at least 6 acres! The more land the better when it comes to equine properties. Keep in mind that the quality of your pastures effect the amount of acreage needed per horse. If the land you purchase is muddy and has less grazing options, we recommend adding an additional acre per horse.

Shelter Considerations

Keep in mind that buying an established horse property will often come with shelters. Shelters are important to keep your horses out of extreme weather such as rain, hot temperatures, and snow.  When a horse’s hair becomes damp, they are unable to retain their body heat and can suffer from freezing temps. A horse shelter can be anything from a loafing shed that is open on one or more sides to a fully enclosed barn with individual stalls.

Fencing Considerations - Which Fencing is Best?

We recommend three types of fencing for your equine property. PVC fencing is cost effective and visually pleasing. While it can break under pressure, it is safe for your horses, especially when paired with electric fencing for added protection. Our second fencing choice is wooden fencing. While wooden fencing is more expensive, it is sturdy but does need regular maintenance. Lastly, our preferred fencing is electric fencing. Electric fencing is not as visually appealing as the first two options. It can be paired with all other fencing options to create a more secure barrier for your horses.
